Asking the Important Questions: Why Do Old Folks Tend to Have Ugly Toenails?

The NYT’s Well Blog has some potential answers: fungus infections, poor circulation, diabetes, accumulated trauma.

I question the assertion that inadequate drying after bathing is an issue.

I like the advice not to wear the same shoes every day.

  1. The Well columns overall are about as helpful as whatever three of my mother’s friends would tell me on a topic. Less so, actually.
Did you see the recent takedowns in the comments section of Jane Brody’s columns on cholesterol and one on diet. Whack, whack, whack.

Re: toenail fungus. Effective treatments vary from person to person, but seem to be eucalyptus or tree tea oil, thyme oil, corn meal or vinegar soaks, and right now, I am giving decolorized iodine a try.
It’s a matter of long-term commitment and using a fungicide.
