Stop Worrying So Much About Delta Variant of COVID-19

A few days hence, the Biden administration will be announcing their plan to get the delta variant of COVID-19 under control. But look at the graph of “cases” published by the CDC and you’ll see that delta variant has already peaked. The will be taking credit for the decline a couple weeks from now. That’s called leading from the rear.

Also from the CDC, this graph of deaths from March 1, 2020, through Sept 4, 2021. Either the virus is less virulent or we’re learning better how to treat it.

This virus is endemic now. The vaccines will not result in herd immunity because vaccinees catch the virus and spread it to others. That is, vaccinees are not immune. At best, the vaccines still prevent severe disease and death, but I await clinical proof of that. (Israel, Iceland, and Gibralter: share your numbers!) Expect another viral peak in December-January 2021-2022 in the U.S. We may even see a bump after the Labor Day gatherings.

  1. My husband a doctor also says the same thing. This thing is not going away. We got to learn to live with it. It’s not going to come under control like we wish it would. Vaccinating is the best we can do. We can not live under the rock for ever.

    • Katherine, I’m worried that the current vaccines will ultimately be very disappointing. We may be allowing the virus to mutate into vaccine-resistant strains. On a positive note, the infection is survivable by most folks, like the flu or a bad cold.

  2. This is so reassuring doc, to hear a voice of reason in these tough times.
