Heavy Smoker? Drink Too Much? Don’t Exercise? Then Gaze Into the Crystal Ball

I know it’s tough, but change is possible.  Read this before it’s too late.  An excerpt:

“The thing they say about a man like my father, and a great many sportswriters match the description, is that he “did not take care of himself”. I cannot think of more than one or two conventionally healthy things that he did in my lifetime, unless I were to count prodigious napping and laughter. In addition to the chain-smoking, he drank a lot, rarely ordering beer except by the pitcher and keeping an oft-replaced bottle of whiskey on top of the fridge, though he showed its effects – when he showed them at all – in only the most good-natured way. He also ate badly and was heavy, at times very heavy, though strangely, especially taking into consideration a total lack of exercise, he retained all his life the thin legs and powerful calves of a runner. He was one of those people who are not meant to be fat, and I think it took him by surprise when his body at last began to give up: it had served him so well.”

QOTD: The Dark Side Of Google Glass

“The key experiential question of Google Glass isn’t what it’s like to wear them, it’s what it’s like to be around someone else who’s wearing them. I’ll give an easy example. Your one-on-one conversation with someone wearing Google Glass is likely to be annoying, because you’ll suspect that you don’t have their undivided attention. And you can’t comfortably ask them to take the glasses off (especially when, inevitably, the device is integrated into prescription lenses). Finally – here’s where the problems really start – you don’t know if they’re taking a video of you.”

Even the Newer, More Expensive Sleeping Pills May Increase Your Risk of Hip Fracture

…if you’re an elderly nursing home resident.  When they were new, drugs like Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata promised low addiction potential and were not linked to falls and hip fractures.  A new study associates their use with hip fractures.  Until 10 years ago, the leading U.S. sleeping pills were benzodiazepines like Restoril and Halcion.

Goldilocks’ Guide to Running: How Much is “Just Right”

It depends on your goals, of course.  Let’s say your goal is postponing death.  Dr. Lyle J. Dennis says:

“Taken together these findings show that regular slow to average paced jogging 1 to 3 times per week and from 1-2.5 hours had a very potent reduction in mortality compared to not jogging. There may be a U-shaped curve, however, with no statistical benefit to jogging more frequently and at faster paces.”

Why Do American Drugs Cost So Much?

“Government regulation is stifling America’s vibrant pharmaceutical industry. A recent report by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology estimates that it costs an average of $1.2 billion to win FDA approval and bring a new drug to market.”

The Martial Arts Road To Fitness

Megan Fox has an article at PJ Media on fitness and family:

The joy of children also comes with the horrors of what motherhood does to the body. Trying to recapture some semblance of my former self, I joined a few fancy corporate gyms with salons and spas and pretty associates selling banana-choco-gluten-free $12 shakes, but I never achieved the results I wanted. It turns out that quitting was the answer. I finally discovered how to get fit and have a great time doing it. I joined a family-owned, martial arts gym. The following truths will convince you to ditch your corporate gym membership in favor of a much better option that actually produces results while improving every area of your life.
